Maria Leptin – EMBO Science Journalism Fellowships support journalists who wish to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding in the life sciences and related fields, as well as life scientists who wish to transition to a full-time career in science journalism.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants wishing to apply to the programme must reside in EMBC member countries and must carry out their in-person work in EMBC member countries. There is no age limit for applying to the programme. Journalists who wish to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding in the life sciences and related fields must work as staff or freelance journalists as their primary profession, provide suitable examples of their published work, and plan to spend the fellowship period at research institutes. Life scientists who wish to transition to a full-time career in science journalism must have at least a master’s degree, document their previous journalistic activities in the life sciences and related fields with suitable examples of their work, and plan to spend the fellowship period as a full-time internship or similar work at the newsrooms of media organizations.

Fellowship Coverage

Fellows are provided with a daily fellowship allowance in varying amounts depending on the country, to contribute to travel and living expenses.The fellowship duration is 3–6 months for journalists and 3–12 months for life scientists who wish to transition to a full-time career in science journalism.Journalist fellows are expected to attend a two-day workshop organized by EMBO in Heidelberg, Germany. Travel and accommodation expenses for this workshop are covered.
